I believe that a regular newspaper or newsletter was published at the Melville base during WWII. If anyone has a file of these newspapers it would offer valuable information to everyone using this website.

I have several of these Base Newspapers called "The Skeeter", shooting the breeze round Melville. They contain many intresting items from News around the base, to men being shipped out, and sports teams and other informational items.

The SKEETER began publication on Thansgiving Day, 1942. It was published once a week on Thursday. It was printed via mimeograph machine and contained anywhere from 4-10 pages (depending on the news). On the anniversary of the opening of the Base, March 16, and the first day of publishing (Thanksgiving), they put out a "professionally" printed edition, (done at the SEABEE base at Quonset Point) that contained photographs.

The SKEEETER ceased publication in mid-October 1945, (I think it was the 19th) just a couple of weeks before the base shut down November 1.

I have 2 of those special printings you are speaking about. They were given to me by Mr. Ken Winetrout, who was the editor of the Skeeter before being shipped out and joining Ron 20. I usually have them in my Exhibit..............
