My Mom tells the story of when she traveled to NYC to join my Dad during the war. Dad must have been stationed at some naval facility in the area, maybe Brooklyn Navy Yard. Anyway, she arrived on the train at Grand Central Station from North Dakota with me, a toddler of about 2 1/2 years (1945??). My Dad couldn't meet her so she was on her own to find a place to stay overnight. She inquired at an aide station and a very New York lady in no uncertain terms told her to take her baby and go right back to where she came from as it was impossible to find housing in the city. Distraught, she did some more searching and found a rat infested, dingy overnight place somewhere. The next day my Dad was able to meet her and set her up in temporary apartment borrowed from an fellow officer who was out of town. In the days to follow she searched high and low for an apartment with little luck as apparently people didn't want to rent to people with children. However, she lucked out as one lady was charmed by my cute baby face and gave in.
