Would anyone have a photo of the 283 boat they could share? Any 283 sailors still around?

Hi Dennis,
You can look on Garth Connely's website and see a drawing provided by Wayne Traxel showing the "PT Gunboat" configuration where they removed the torpedoes and added lots of twin 50 cal mounts. Also they added another 40mm cannon to the bow. There is a photo of PT285 which was similarly modified. You can get in touch with Garth, or possibly Wayne Traxel who are both regular PT Discussion board contributors. I am sure he may be able to help. Also Will Day may have a picture of the 283 boat. Here is a link to Garths PT Boat World website. Also by the way were you aware of PT283's fate? It was sunk by friendly fire. PT-283 sunk by destroyer USS Guest (DD-472) while spotting, off Choiseul Island, Solomons, 17 Mar. 1944.

Hello! Here is a relative of a 282/283 sailor:
http://www.ptboats.org/cgi-local/sitenetbbs/netboardr.cgi?fid=102&cid=101&tid=155&sc=20&pg=1&x=0
He wrote a brief narrative on his life and a big chunk of it is written from the action report on the loss of the 283. If I remember correctly his contact info isn't in the message board - I'll dig up his email address and ask him to stop by.
Grandson of James J Stanton

I'm sorry to report that I haven't any info on PT 283 other than she was converted into a gunboat with PT's 284 and 285 in January / February 1944 by the Tender USS Argonne and that she was sunk on St Patricks Day in March 1944. Following the 283's loss PT- 282 was converted into a gunboat as a replacement. The majority of info on Garths web site concerning the Ron 23 Gunboats was received through coorespondence from Richard Haspel, skipper of PT-284, the boat and crew on the scene to rescue some of 283's crew. I was very fortunate that Mr. Haspel had retained his notebook on the conversion of his boat which were very helpful at determining the configuration of these unusually armed craft. PT's 285 appearence was gained through recollections of the boats skipper Wilbur ( Rocky) Pooley and a majority of the crew serving on 285 as a gunboat. The 285 Gunboat photo featured in Garths website was the only shot I was ever able to find. So Far.

Guys;
Just to throw my two cents into that question attached to this thread, i don't know what is going on, World War ll Chief Warrant Officers had crossed anchors and rope as thier cap device. Nothing else. I believe shadows and lighting are the affect in this photo, thet is all.
Take care,
TED

While looking for something else I found an old 1983 PT Newsletter photo of PT283 crew and their ID's.
Hope this helps.
