Greetings PT family. I know this isn't a PT Boat but thought I would share since I've spoken about it more than a few times. This is a tribute build to my wife's late Uncle who served aboard Boat 4 of the USS Geneva, APA-86 whcih was an Anphibious Attack Transport.

If you're interested in the build I posted this on Fine Scale Modeler and it should appear on modelwarships.com web site soon.

The base for my PT-109 will be very similar to this one except that it will be maple instead of cherry. Outside of my wife's uncle I also imagine Dick Keresey bobbing around on one of these waiving down JFK as he described in his book, PT-105.

Enjoy

David,

This is wonderful work. How did you do the base?

Thanks Jerry,
The base is a couple of pieces of 4/4 Cherry that I edged glued and cut to size. I put a rabbit around the edge to allow for the case top which is made from Plexiglas. The base was banded with 3/4 quarter round.

After the base was assembled and sanded I made up some art work in Microsoft Word and gave it all to a company that does custom wood engraving. When I got it back I added 3 coats of wipe on polyurethane.

I glued on some round plastic stock to the bottom of the stand, drilled matching holes in the base and then used epoxy to glue it down. The boat was then epoxied to the stand.

It was a little expensive to do it this way but considering the subject I didn't mind.

Thanks for asking and glad you liked the build.
Dave

David

A beautiful job. The craft looks super and what more can I say about the base and images burned into the wood. I wish I knew how to do this because my next project afte the Elco Crane, will be a 1/35 scale PT 374 in honor of my good friend, who served on her........

What a great tribute to your Uncle. Not only is the modeling and display case superb, the paint and markings are also outstanding. It is difficult to paint such detail without obscuring it. If my arm was long enough I'd give you a big pat on the back.

Fine model work has always impressed me, I don't see how you do it...
