I was just browising around and I found this web site that has the full episodes of McHales Navy. I haven't seen these since the early seventies so I had quite a hoot watching some of these episodes.

What a concept to base a TV Sitcom of a PT crew during WWII.

The first in the series has the classic scene of Ernest Borgnine (McHale) water skiing behind the 73 boat.

Some of the other plot lines actually touch on some facts from during the war. In one episode McHale and his crew was to be sent to Murmansk as part of a lend/lease program with the Russians.

These are really silly sitcoms but they have some moments.

The two boats depicted in the series was PT 73 (McHale) and PT116 (Lt. Carpenter)

I love that show. As a kid in 1964 or so, I never seemed to miss it. You can buy the whole darn season's at Amazon.com. One of the best sitcoms of those early black and white TV days. Captain Binghampton and Mr. Parker just stole the show in those days. I cant imagine anyone never seeing this show..........

When McHale’s Navy came on TV, I thought it was silly and did a disservice to PT veterans, but watched mostly because my kids thought it was funny. Now I realize it was! If you looked beyond the Hollywood influence, it depicted an element of the Navy that people couldn’t imagine. Admiral Kinkaid is quoted as saying about the PTs, ”I know they are a bunch of undisciplined river rats, but they’re doing a hell of a job”. On our boat we never had uniforms and thought naval regulations were the last resort when you couldn’t think of any other way of doing something. We never saluted anybody or called our officers “Sir”. We had no revile, taps or other routines. Our barber was one of our MotorMacs and we had no showers, vanities or even mirrors. The one crew toilet was in the very bow, couldn’t be used when under way and never worked anyway (don’t even ask!).
About a million people, or maybe a hundred (I can remember 3 or 4) have suggested I publish my web site on which I show a number of my PT original paintings. It is www.rpickett.com . It always needs updating and often has problems but be my guest.

Don't worry Bob, even as a kid I knew it couldn't have been THAT goofball in reality.

Life was more like your Tulagi camp painting with the kneedeep mud eh? Great artwork, thanks for sharing. The boats are alive and unmistakable, and the skys are gorgeous like real tropical skys can be.

I am pretty sure we all know that Mchales Navy was never like the real PT Boat Navy, although in some repect it was. For the laugh factor, you can't beat it. It was a well done show that had a cast of characters just like the real PT Boat Navy. Iam sure that Bob, CJ, and others will atttest to the fact that each crew had a funny guy, a goofy guy that may have fouled up some, a fellow that was the best looking and got all the girls(provided they found any) or a tough Captain that went by the book.

Since this message came on here, I have broken ou my first season CD of Mchales Navy and have watched about 5 episodes. It seems to be wacky at times but stil makes me laugh like hell..............

I'm pretty sure the PT boat concept for "McHale's Navy" came about from the public's renewed interest in the boats due to JFK's WWII service in MTBs.

I remember this show came on at 8:30 pm on Tuesday nights, right after "Combat!" I was never allowed to watch it because it was "past my bedtime." I had to wait and catch the "reruns" during the summer to see it!

Drew

I am not sure how old you are. Iam 52, but I do remember watching Combat in my hometown every Wednesday night at 8:00pm. In those days we only got something like 3 channels with everything in black and white. Mchales Navy came on right after Combat and I remember my Sister wanting to watch something else. She never won out because those were my favorite shows. It was Combat, Mchales Navy, 12 o'clock High, Wild Wild West, and Rat Patrol. Boy, those were the good old days. Now we have 256 plus channels to watch and nothing good is ever on. COME ON BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD DAYS............

Frank,

I'm 55, and had to BEG my parents to let me "stay up" and watch "Combat!" on Tuesday nights. Back then, it was on WKRC Channel 12, from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm here in Cincinnati. The rule in our house was "no TV on school nights," which were, of course, Monday through Thursday. We caught a break on Fridays and Saturdays, and a limited one on Sunday nights, when I remember seeing Walt Disney and Ed Sullivan.

The hoops I had to jump through, in order to be allowed to watch "Combat!" on Tuesday school nights were: 1) get a signed homework list for that night from my teachers, 2) complete said homework, 3) have completed homework checked by a parent, and 4) take a bath and be ready for bed the minute "Combat!" ended. So you see, I had to watch "McHale's Navy," which came on at 8:30, in summer reruns.

Man, our "Greatest Generation" parents were strict (God bless them)!

There was another TV show about the same time as Combat that was also set in the ETO and followed a squad of GI's in combat. I don't recall the name of it. Does anyone remember?
