Many times we have seen photographs of the boats as they come off the assembly lines and into the water. I have often wondered about some of the changes made to the boats. Lets back up here a moment: PT 103 for instance came out of Elco with 2 forward Mk-8 Torpedoes, and 8 Depth charges in her stern. I have several Elco Photographs showing her running in different time Trials. When then, did the rear Torpedo Tubes get put on. I would think this was no easy task. Was it done at Elco before being shipped to Ron 5.

When and where were some of these changes completed. I would think that PT 103 when doing time trials in Newark Bay was a completed desgn as were all of the boats. I have not seen PT 103 in any other pictures showing rear torpedoes, yet many modlers have her made just that way...........

Hello Frank,

A photo of PT 103 in Victor Chuns book Page 25 shows the 103 preparing to refuel The boat at this time period is fitted with four torpedo tubes in the run out position.

I don't know when the additional aft tubes were installed either but I would imagine these weapons were installed in US before shipment over seas.

Frank;
I imagine RON 5 was no different than RON 2. Meaning, PT 109 had her aft tubes removed at Tulagi, because there was a shortage of parts. 109 did not have her aft tubes reinstalled as of November 1942(ie photo on Gene's website) and probably not until things quited down after Feb 1943. The photos of her in the Russels(May 1943) show the aft tubes reinstalled. So this leads me to believe RON 5 was the same way, sometime before they moved up to Rendova. I will reread Dick Kerseys book and see when he mentions the aft tubes.
Take care,
TED
