As we fast approach what I like to call the best Holiday of all, I am reminded of those few who feel offended in our Country to call this special day, CHRISTMAS. Sorry all you liberals and outsiders, but this day will always be known as Christmas. Now, I don't want to start a big contraversy here, so with that said, I want to here from some of you on how you spent your Christmas during WWII.
Where were you, and did you do anything special. How did you spend Christmas Eve or Christmas day on a PT BOAT, Base, or Tender. Did you get letters just prior to Christmas, and what wre your thoughts. Did any of you Cookies prepare special meals for the Crew or Base. Did you go out on Patrol on Chrismas Eve, or Christmas Day. How about exchaging gifts among the crew, and did special Christmas packages arrive from home. I know all of us our interested, and before I forget, "MERRY CHRISTMAS".............

As I recall, the two Christmases I spent on board PT167 were dull and definately not Merry. We didn't have the luxury of a base chaplain and a few makeshift decorations poped up, Otherwuise they were just "another day". We took our turn at patrolling through the Christmas season, but I just now realized I can't remember if we went out on Chhristmas eve or Christmas night. We did nothing special.

I spent Christmas 1943 at Treasury. We patroled Bougainville the night before got to base about 9;00 A.M. I recall we had turkey and all the trimmings for dinner and that made the day a really memorable one. Late in the afternoon we were not on the list of boats to go out so we were issued 2 bottles of beer each. The first we had had for some time. That really made our Christmas complete.
Christmas 1944 I had been relieved of duty on PT 242 and was home on 30 days leave so I spent it with my Mom and Dad in Oklahoma.
Christmas 1945 I had just been discharged from the Navy and was home with my wife Sue for our first Christmas together.

Christmas 1943 was on the beach at Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Several of us waiting transportation to New Guinea enjoyed the day in the sand and in the water. We probably did not have turkey. Christmas 1944 was at Mios Woendi where a group of us were awaiting transportation back to the USA. We probably had a turkey dinner. Christmas 1945 I was back home with my parents for turkey and dressing. Less than two months later I received my discharge from the navy. |

I spoke to my good friend, Wallace McNeish, Gunners Mate, PT 374. In 1943, they went out on regular patrol on Christmas Eve. Not much talk about the upcoming Holiday, and all was uneventful that night. When they returned to Base on Christmas Day, Wallace went about the task of cleaing guns, changing ammo, and geting the boat ready. He said there was no time to celebrate, and they did not get any packages from home, although he did get several letters from home, which were a month late or so. Some of the guys talked about home, and others kept to them self. No gifts were exchanged, although the Skipper broke out some Beer he kept below in his quarters.........

Bob Pic: I read your Christmas recollections. My dad as XO on the 168. He never mentioned Christmas that I can recall. He was on board the Christmas of '44. Was that the same time as you? Do you recall anything about the 168...crew, action, etc? Would like to hear about it if you would. You may email me privately if you wish.
