Recently I was looking at an individual's good conduct medal [army]. I noticed that on the back the individual's name was engraved. My curiosity was aroused. Does every individual medal have the recipient's name engraved? It makes sense to me, but it is just something that I had not seen before. None of my medals are individual awards, just mass awards like American Theater and Asiatic- Pacific.

No, not all of the medels were engraved. In fact, most were not. Of all the medals I have had donated, only 2 were engraved. Remember, many of the medals were given in the Field, and many were given years after service. If fact, I have a Silver Star that was awarded to Leighton Huck Wood, XO, then Skipper of PT 124 for action in the Solomons. This was awarded to him in he field. No name was ever engraved........

Frank:

Regarding the Silver Star that you have- when that was presented was there also a written statement or certificate issued which explained the conditions under which the award was won?

Yes, I have the certificate (write up) that accompanies the medal. As a side note here, All medals that were given out to a Servicemen that died were sent to the familes engraved. Some others did engrave them in the filed on their own, and some familes had them done as well. Be very cautious if any of you try and purchase medal groupings from dealers. Many medals are simply done today at their local jewlers, then sold to folks for big bucks. Also, certain medals were engraved in a certain way, so know the differences before you purchase anything. In my case all mdals, and ribbons I have were donated to me from the PT BOAT VETS and their families..........

Frank:

All good information. Is there a way to get copies of those certificates that were given with the Silver Star and other medals? Or at least a way to simply access the information specific to each winner?

That I am not sure about Allen. I do not know if the Navy Department keeps all of those records, or for that matter, if they releae the information to just anyone. You could call them and ask, or check with PT Boat headquarters. Of course, maybe someone on the message board has that answer.

Thanks to all for information regarding engraving on the medals. Unless the rules have changed, I believe that information from personnel records can only be obtained by next of kin.

In addition to the printed citations given to recipients of individual medals, the navy also mailed printed copies of the Presidential Unit Citation after the war was over and secrecy of the information was no longer necessary. They were mailed to home addresses for those who had been discharged. These citations can by easily found.

QM:

I inquired of this board earlier regarding how to get a copy of a Pres Unit Citation, which my father's discharge cert references as him qualifying for but I received no advise as to how to go about getting that information. Is it something that I can apply for somewhere? It sounds like you have some particular knowledge regarding this. Canb you point me in the right direction?

Allan:

The presidential unit citation can be found in At Close Quarters. This is slightly different than the one I received from the navy department. My copy is for Ron 12. The published copy is for squadrons 12 and 21. Apparently there were separate identical citations for the two squadrons. If you would like the ron 12 citation, I can try to dig my copy out of safekeeping and type it here.
