You can find this image at the Kennedy Library as well. Jack Kennedy is shown. My dad was there at the same time and I am hopeful I found his picture as well. If anyone has a list of who is in the picture let me know. I bet there is a lot of history in the men pictured.
My dad left Melville for New York as he was assigned to the new Squadron 9. This is where he met Pat Rogers in December 1942.

I have a list of those in the this picture/class. IT was from a LT England, who was in the class. Photobucket is not letting me upload files now (gives me a netork error) so I can't post it, (I'll try later).
However, accoring to the list, there are no Smith's listed in this class. The person you point out is listed as Ensign E. S. A. Clifford.

To Nat Smith,
I first met your father, Lt. Hamlin Smith, in Dec. 1942 when I joined PT154, Ron 9 so I only know him from that time. The person you identify as your father does not fit my recollection of him.
As I recall, John Kennedy did not join PTs until he showed up at Rendova (Munda)) in June or July 1943 as a replacement officer. The scuttlebutt I heard was that he was transferred out of some job working for an admiral in Washington, DC. In the group picture, it does look like what I remembered of Kennedy to me.
I noticed that a Lt. England was mentioned by QM. I believe he was a good friend of your father.
To: QM,
At that time in SOPAC, the PT!154 Exec Officer, Lt. Joseph McLaughin, was familiar with John Kennedy. I am curious as to whether or not he is on the same group picture.

My error in my previous mailing.
I referred to QM as a correspondent. It should have been to 29Navy.
My apologies to both.

My dad, Hamlin Smith, went from Torpedo School (August 10-31, 1942) to MTB Squadron Training (starting Sept 1, 1942) He was at MTBSTC for September and October. The class picture in the original post was dated October 1942. Kennedy was a month behind my dad. There must be a group picture of the class before Kennedy's for the guys that started on September 1.
I had hoped I found my dad in the picture.
I am eager to see the listing of the men in the photo.

Greetings and Happy Thanksgiving to all,
The 7th class photo has some special meaning for those in Ron 15. There are 12 of the original 36 Officers, from the 18 boats in the squadron, in this class. ( The 10th class also has 12 ).
Front Row : Ed Arbuckle, Hal Lerner, and Gene Clifford.
Center Row: George Patterson, J. Lionberger Davis, Cecil Sanders and Knox Eldridge.
Rear Row: Lowry Sinclair, Tom Dailey, Fred Rosen, Page Tulloch and Jack Torrance.
Thought you might be interested. I would like to know where others in this photo ended up, if anyone knows.

Don’t know if you noticed or not, but they “typo-ed” Kennedy’s name as J. L. Kennedy. Interesting thing is that that typo followed him throughout his two months (or so) at Melville. Seems they just copied from the mis-typed roster. When they took the officer class down to Elco in November, on the letter orders, they still had him listed as Ens. J. L. Kennedy, even though he had made JG in October. And when they made the list for orders, he was still listed as J. L. Kennedy (although listed as Lt(jg).
But here is where they were initially sent to:
RON 4 – J. B. Williams, Kennedy, Sawin, Carroll and Thompson.
RON 8 – Jackson, Avery, Efland, Snyder
RON 9 – Robertson, Hayes, Davidson, Schneider, Randall, England, Cabot, Ruff
RON 10 – Howell, Rome, Blake, N. D. McCarthy, T. J. McCarthy, Hudson, Shugart, Falvery, R. R. Williams
RON 13 – Harrison, McCauley
RON 14 – Arbuckle, Wood, Davis, Sinclair, Tulloch, Clifford, Daily, Patterson, Torrance, Eldridge, Rosen, Sanders, Lerner
Dropped from PTs – O’Shaughnessy, McCorkle, McMahon, Genesy, Paul, Mee, Everett, Ahmuty, Wilson, Onken, Snow, Ganong, Fanget
Interesting is that the dropped from the PT program for this class is about 25 percent.
