I've noticed , most PT boat photos show the US flag flying from the starboard side of the mast, but have seen other's flying from the port side, much fewer though. Was there a standard order as to which side or just a lose preference. I've include a not so typical port side photo recently published on this board. I want to make sure the two Higgins cut-aways are accurate. The port side position, the flag is more visible then when it is ilustrated on the starboard side.

Thanks,
Dick . . . .

You know Dick this is a good question, although I have seen the Flag flying both Port and Starboard. All of my models in the Exhibit fly thier colors on the Starboard side of the mast, but I have seen some flying the colors dead center of the mast. Usually the Commissioning pennant flys up their as well...........

My mistake, my Flags are port side on the mast. One of these days I will remember port and starboard.

With the recent mention and discussion on PT's (U.S.) flags, I've been wondering...

What determined where the PT would fly it's U.S. flag? I've seen them flown both from the stern flag stand on deck and aloft, from the various different PT masts...

What situations/conditions/decisions determined the flown flag's location? Surely they didn't fly two U.S. flags at once...

We frequently had the radar antenna down. The flag was then flown at the stern. I do not remember any rule as to when the flag should be flown on the antenna mast.

In a general Navy sense, it is flown on the stern when moored (along with the Jack forward). Then shifted to the main when underway.

Of course if the mast is down, from the stern is acceptable. In many cases when underway, they weren't flown at all until really needed.

So, I'm assuming if I show it on the left (Port) side it wouldn't be wrong? If that is the case the flag will be more visable.

Thanks,
