my grandfather in law was a member of pt 365 and he has the flag that was flown on the boat...I would very much like to get him a case to seal the flag in and with which he could display it, I was wondering if the flags where a particular size...I saw it folded up and didnt feel comfortable unfolding it to measure it, its seen some action and a lot of years in a trunk. if anyone has any info i would appreciate it. I think of all the memorabilia out there this piece is worth protecting above all others...its why we fight.

I have several Flags in my PT BOAT EXHIBIT and you can display them in several ways. The Flag opened all the way, are pretty large, and you can display it in a shadow type box, which I picked up at my local Michaels Craft Store. They are wooden, have a black background which you can pin to it and it will hold he Flag.
You can also take the Flag to your local Frame Shop and they can do it as well. Be prepared to spend a few bucks using this option, but they will use a special backing to protect the Flag, and it will look great. I think I spent $80.00 for a shadow box for my Flag and my wife pinned it in ( it looks fine ) I also have another battle Flag folded and showing the tattered end in a Ryker Box ( black display boxes in different sizes ) These boxes you can buy on EBAY. I did it that way because I just did not have the extra money t have it framed. I got a price of $280.00 to have it done. I have an Elco E Flag that was done by my good friend who is a carpenter. He made the case for the Flag very simular to the shadow box, attached it to a black backing and used a real nice plexi-glass to finish off the front. Good luck, you should have no problem finding a method that fits your budget.........

I believe that the flag may be 2' x3'. If I had one of the old flags with a tattered end from flapping in the wind I would want it mounted to show the damage. If the flag is undamaged you could consider folding in the standard triangle and storing in in triangular display box as many do with the casket flags.
But first, if the flag is in good enough condition and the weather is good, consider flying that flag for one last time on November 11. |

One of PT 109's tattered U.S. flags (her first?) was removed by crew member Charles "Bucky" Harris when she underwent overhaul at Tulagi in July of 1943, and is on display at the JFK Museum in Boston.

Another thought regarding displaying the flag. If I had one which was condition, I would find a place in the house to hang the flag on a wall. Hanging inside, the flag should not deteriorate. |

One of the most importatnt things when displaying a Flag from WWII is the correct backing. All of my backings are acid free, which helps to protect the Flag inside the case. Remember, the Sun is the number one enemy when it comes to Flags and or collectibles. The ultra-violet rays will soon cause discoloration to any piece if hung where the sun hits it.
I have had items donated that have hung in direct sunlight, and were runied because of exposure. Also remember that indoor lighting using Flouresent bulbs can cause damage from long term exposure. My Flags only get exposure in an Exhibit, and after that, they are put away in an acid free Museum Box. Nothing from my Exhibit see's the sun. It can and will destroy your collectibles. If you must hang any Flag inside, be sure it has been properly protected, and away from any Sunlight coming thru an open window. Uniforms of any kind should also be properly stored away from sunlight. All of my uniforms or Jackets are kept in a Museum Proected Garment Box. If you do not want this expense, store them in a Cedar Chest in a cool place. They will last a life-time. If you have anything in an attic or Trunk, get it out of there. Homes where people smoke can also wreck your Flag or collectibles. If you must smoke inside, keep your items in a Museum Box. Never store items in a Basement, bedcause dampness will also play havoc on your items. High humidity can cause problems as well. So, if you value that Flag or Uniform, have it properly protected, and if you want to display it, send it to me as a donation to the Exhibit ( I had to throw that in ) lol.................
