Garth
My comments were certainly not that the boats could not down Aircraft. I had always felt that the twin 50 caliber machine gun was the boats most vital weapon. The 20MM was a wonderful weapon against Aircraft as well. My comments were meant more for the larger caliber guns like the 37MM and 40MM.
Please don't misquote me guys, I think those 2 weapons were wonderful, but more in line with fixed targets and not fast Aircraft. The 40MM was a great weapon on a Capital Ship because they were being trained by gun trainers and were automatic. The 40MM on a PT BOAT did not run automatically, and had to be manual trianed and operated, which made for a much slower operation. True, the PT BOATS would never have been such a success as a gun platform without those 2 weapons, but my only point was that they were not very effective on Aircraft. Both the 50 caliber weapons and the 20MM cannon could chew up an enemy plane with much more ease, simply because both were easier to train on the target . The 37MM gunner, was almost in a seated position or on his knees when firing that weapon. It had to be pretty tough to swing that gun around on a fast moving aircraft.
In any event, there is no doubt that the weapons used on a PT BOAT were simply a wonderful collection of weapons, in which each one did the job they were intended to do..............

According to research done by Doug deMarrais 195 had both 40 and 37 cannons along with a quad fifty and a pair of single 50's. I am not sure what they had for bases/mounts.

The photos I have of the 195 show the 40mm (stern), quad-50s & 37mm (bow) and a single 20mm in each turret.

I was Qm on PT167 for 2 years. We had a single barrel 40 MM Bofors mounted on the fantail. It was restricted to 38 degeses altitude pointing because it would destroy the deck if pointed too high. We obtained an obsolete army 37MM antitank gun and mounted its tripod on the very front of the deck. Very few gunners could handle it because it required the gunner to be strapped into the shoulder brackets and using his legs as the other tripod legs. It was the only armor piercing weapon we had that could shoot forward and we had a good gunner. We moved the two 20MM Orlicon aircraft guns to positions further back on the foredeck.

Bob;
May I be the first to welcome you to the board! If you go to the photobucket account that we post photos on, you will see my photos of a model I built of PT 167 "WHO ME?" in 1/32nd scale, circa Nov 1944. I also built a 1/72nd scale model of PT 167 circa spring 1945, after her re-fit with 5 inch rocket launchers and SO-A radar. Jack Bowman was my main source for technical info, and I had a crew photo of the Sparks crew.
Again welcome, I hope to hear from you soon, if you would like e-mail me off sight.
Take care,
TED

Bob, Ted and anyone else interested-
Several years ago I also built a model of PT 167 ("WHO ME?") in her 1945 configuration. T. Garth Connolly allowed me to post an article about the project on his website. You can see my model at http://www.ptboatworld.com/PT_Boat_Models/PT167.htm
Thanks,
ALEX

Alex;
After looking at photos on Garth's site, I was in error, PT 167 recieved SO-3 radar in late spring 1945 and that is the way my 1/72nd scale model looks.
Take care,

Will - my father was a torpedoman aboard PT 195 (Gil deMarrais). If you have any copies of the pictures you cited I would appreciate it.
