Saw it, the guy selling it is more interested in the dough then the History. I tried to get it for the Exhibit. I will bid on it, but it should go for a mint, which I do not have at this time.........

Frank;
Why does the plate look bronze in some of the photos and aluminum in others? I thought the 77' boats and these early 80' boats had bronze builders plates
AT ANY RATE I WISH I HAD IT!!!!!

Some of the early boat builder plaques were a light weight bronze color, but then changed in the 103 class Elco Boats to the standard aluminum plate. Later boats changed to a bakelight material and did away with the heavier plate in favor of the plastic or bakelight builders plate. Who knows, maybe material was in short supply, or they even worried about saving weight. One must remember that is is very easy to replicate these plaques so whoever buys it, should be sure to authenticate the piece.

Frank,
How would you go about authenticating a plate ? Especially if it's a bakelite or plastic one.

During WWII certain alloys were used in creating the metal plates. I have a friend who owns a metal shop and can tell under a microscope what the piece is made from. Bakelight is another product used during WWII to save precious meals and the paint used to create the builders plates is not in use today. The builders plate from PT 118 certainly looks real from the photo's, but I prefer to have it checked and in my hands. Of course, having a sister builders plate certainly helps. PT BOATS INC. has some on display and I am sure if whoever buys this PT 118 Plate, can ship it to them for a look see...........

Hmmmmmm...
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but.....if the boat was damaged, then destroyed to prevent capture, who on earth would take the time to remove something like this from PT 118? Wouldn't the more important reuseable items go first? Such as the more personal items, or weapons, rather than a small plate screwed to the boat?
Bye, bye for now,
Joy

Interesting point, although I have found items coming from the boats, to be that of Builders Plates, Clocks, Knobs, Flags, Tool Boxes, ect. One never knows what these young Sailors did to take home a piece of their boat. Remember, that the boats were home to these guys, so it would not be uncommon for them to ake a piece home. The Builder Plates were screwed to the chart house by 4 small scews, so possibley the Skipper, XO, Radioman, or Quartermaster wanted to grab it to have something to remind them of their boat that was being destroyed. It could also be quite possible they took it so it would not fall into the hands of the enemy, which would give the location of the boats being built, year, and the number..............

I realize it has been many years since this thread was posted, but, does anyone know who finally bought this?
To expand on Joy's question and Frank's answer, we now know it was Tulagi area SOP to remove the builders plates from the boat. Also if this was sold in the California area, and from what Bridge and I have dug up recently, it would not surprise me at all, if Ted Robinson(2nd XO of PT 118) brought this plate home with him.
Take care,
