Thanks so much. It is much easier if you contact me by E-Mail than using the message board. mosquitofleet@comcast.net I look forward to seeing some of the scans you have. THANKS AGAIN.

I spent very little time on a base but one incident stands out. When I arrived in the Solomons our first stop was Guadalcanal, late at night, and of course during a rainstorm. Mud was thick and everywhere. Our "new boots" were mud to the knees. Tha dockmaster was not expecting us but said we could sleep in the church. We were pleased to see a church building in the rain and headed for it, only to find it was only the front facade, rubble for a floor, no roof or walls. We found the friendliest rubble pile and tried to minimize the blowing rain. It finally passed and about the time we got to sleep there was an air raid. From there things went downhill. After that I always appreciated being on a boat and not a base.

Bob

Thanks for sharing that story. Funny how certain things stick out in ones mind. No doubt some very tough times were had by all. Some of the bases I have learned were horrible places, like Tent City in England, which was a cold and rainy place in the fall and winter. Large winds would sometimes blow the tents down, knocking over the coal stoves and causing fire hazards............

We discussed base location many times as we went from a bad base to a worse one. We were informed (qualifications of informant questionable) that the first three considerations were location (X 3). Strategic location based on current front line, military plans and distance to potential patrol areas was then considered. And last, they considered feasibility of construction of a base with ample harbor, negotiable land with sea access for unloading munitions and fuel (from scouting reports). We always wondered why no consideration was given to defences such as an air strip.
Hats off to the sea bees who always did a super job with the locale they were handed and used good judgement on fitting the base into the environment.

Hi Earl,
I'm wondering if you were on the 108 boat as a cook? I was on the 107 and I think I probably met you in the Solomon's.
