Greetings,
I received an email from U-Models today that they are about to release a new detail set for the Italeri 1/35 PT Boat. Here's a photo of the set. You should be able to pick these up from Blast Models in France before too long. They are a very good online retailer. Enjoy.

Just a comment . . . .

But, the American flag just left lying on top of the cabin!

Don't take me wrong the details are beautiful, but the flag just left there lying down, unattended, unfold folded off the mast.

Maybe its me, but it just bothers me. Just remembering as a young lad, having the honor raising and lowering the flag every school day and if the Mother Superior or any Nun would have seen the flag touch the ground or left on a desk or table without being folded and put in the flag locker. Would have at the very least dealt out twenty lashes across the knuckles with the old wood ruler.

Yes those were the old days of the fifties and sixties, when we stood out side every day (inside on rainy days) straight and stiff with hand over heart and recited the Pledge of Allegiance followed by singing of the National Anthem. Then scurried in the classroom by the nuns to start the day.

All the best,
Dick . . .

In all my days would I ever buy something like this. It is a slap in the face to the United States, and to all that the Flag stands for. To have the Flag just laying there in a heap, would never have been done. Someone should call the Company and let them know that. I must say that if I ever see this on anyones model, I will certainly let them know how I feel. My uncle who was with the 2cond Marine Division, and was killed on Sipan as a young 18 year old Marine, would turn over in his grave if i ever had anything like that in my Exhibit or on my boats. Sorry guys, this is how I feel..............

As a side note here. Around 1996 or so, I had built 2 Lindberg PT 109 Kits for a model show in Chicopee, Massachusetts. I thought it would be great to show the American Flag in the display. Being young and not thinking, I put the Flag at the base of the model. It was not long before a WWII veteran came up to me and said. " Your display of the American Flag is a dishonor to those of us who fought under it". Although he knew what I was trying to achieve, he set me straight. I removed that Flag and apologized to him. I never forgot those words. Someone years later, and very close to me, chose to display his model in the same way. I passed on these words of wisdom to him, and he too, never did that again.

I suspected that there would be this reaction and perhaps I should have lead the discussion on this issue. The sculpter and the producer are not American and I'm certain they mean no disrespect. Personally I wouldn't put the flag piece on my boat either. I suspect you could paint it as a captured Japanese or German flag war prize just as well. Building a diorama you could put it on a dock and paint it in the flag of your choice. Just be prepared to offend somebody. :-)

I wasn't really interested in this particular piece anyway. It was the other items that caught my attention.

The gentleman at U-Models was very nice to keep me in mind and I'm very grateful for that. I also suggested to his team that an early SO radar system would be awesome as well as an American crew appropriately dressed... or rather not dressed as we see them in our photos. You know what I mean. Shorts, probably no shirt, ball cap or no cap. Imagine a sailor in his shorts with a life preserver and helmet manning the forward 37mm, 20mm, whatever. I really like to encourage these folks because they work very hard to make some very high quality parts for us. You should see the LCVP I enhanced with their parts.

One other thought... who says you have to paint it as a flag. You could make it into a sheet of canvas just as well.

PS. Royal Model will be coming out with their set in the next few weeks.

David . . .

Please don't take any comment, as negative against you. I’m glad to see you posting the info. The product information is more important then the sensitivity of the subject.

As far as we know the sculptor might have intended it to be a small tarp. Also the sculptor may not have been the painter. The painter more then likely thought it might be of more interest if it was an American flag on an American boat – without knowing it might seem be seen as tasteless or disrespectful (that is if the artist isn’t a Frenchmen or an old Cold-War-Russki).

It’s my believe the flag respect is much stronger for those of use who are early baby-boomers, vets and earlier Americans. It seems the Vietnam war brought out a lot rebellious attitudes and those attitudes and frustrations were taken out on the flag for shock valve. Resulting in the flag itself taken with a lot less respect or understanding of the respect.

David thanks for posting the product.

All the best,
Dick . . .

David, I too want to ket you know that my comments ( although I stand by what I said ) were not directed at you. I think its great that some of these products are finding their way into modelers hands. I think the Flag thing is not the way to go, but your suggestion of a tarp on the day room is a good thing............

Thanks guys. I never thought your comments were directed at me. I just thought it was important to put it into perspective. I share the same feelings about the flag that you all do. Knowing who produced these I feel compelled to cut them some slack and put it into perspective.

Just a though - what is a jerrycan doing on the day cabin. What, a nice good ten gallons of high octane gasoline laying around, what, just in case you run low. Now I'm just getting to damn picky - but I can't help myself - but maybe a couple of wooden crates in its place would have been more appropriate.

Best to all, from the grump,
Dick . . . .
