My Father-in-Law, William F. Jajtner, passed away and wanted us to have a Bronze Marker placed on his grave site. We plan on ordering the larger flat Bronze marker. The application form allows for optional inscription space. William was a Carpenter's Mate, Second Class V6 USNR on an Elco in Squadron 33. He was given an Honorable discharge on 10/30/1945 after 3 years of service.
His discharge papers state his service was: USNTC GR. LKS. ILL., MTBSTR. CTR. PORTSMOUTH,R.I., MTB SQUADRON 33, USS 1st 613, USS REFUGE. Also, under remarks his discharge papers state: AMERICAN AREA RIBBON, ASIATIC - PACIFIC (3 STARS), PHILIPPINE, LIB. (2 STARS), GOOD CONDUCT. His Ratings held were: AS, S 2/c, CS 1/c, CM 2/c., CM 2/c. What do you recommend for the optional inscription to be placed on his Marker and the correct abbreviations? Is there any other info that you would add to his inscription? Please let us know what is best to put on the marker.

Thanks,
Dean Jorstad

For one of my brothers who served in the army I included a cross for his church affiliation. As a PT Boater, I would like some reference to PT Boats. The highest rate attained would also be appropriate,

First off, Dean, my condolences on the passing of your father. We here have a special interest in the service men like your dad provided and it's great that you'll help honor that at his gravesite.

If PT's were his thing (as opposed to the other duties/craft he was involved with in the Navy) then I'd do something like below. I guess the question would be this: do you want it to be in navy terms (CM 2/c, MTBRON 33) or in terms future visitors would be able to understand, like this:

Carpenter's Mate 2/c
PT Boat Squadron 33
Pacific Theater WWII

I don't know how much room you have or how much you want to include, but I think that would convey his job, his group and when and where he was. A fourth line with a quote would leave a visitor with something to ponder. Birchy00's "An Iron Man in a Wooden Boat" is good!

Let us know what you decide!

Dean;
My condolences on your fathers last patrol. As far as suggestions are concerned, as James said it will be your decision, and it depends on the space you are allowed on the marker, but here are my two cents. Being a Navy man, I suggest keep it Navy.
