Hi there.

In some images I notice that PT boat crew helmets appear to be bigger than those worn by US Marines. Were the crew helmets and the Marine helmets the same?

Thanks from PeterTareBuilder

There were really no Helmets just made for PT BOATERS. They got what were issed, or scrounged. Remember, Navy Blue Helmets were mostly issed to those on large War ships, so the PT boys wore standard green helmes, which were typical of the US Forces helmet. Very early boats, (70 footers) and some of the 77 footers had the Navy talking helmets, which wre used so ear cups and head set could be used. They were not standard issue to the boys from the PT BOATS. I have one from PT 113, and it is a standard issed GI Helmet. That's not to say that some of the blue issue Navy Helmets did not find their way into some of the boat crews. From experience I have learned that no 2 boats were alike, inregards to what they had for equipment...............

Hi Frank.

Once again I give you my thanks for clarifying some thing for me. I asked that because I am just about ready to start transplanting some Academy and Tamiya heads onto my Lindberg PT boat kit crewmen.

A really interesting pose is to use one of the gunners from the .50 caliber gun tubs for the 20mm Oerlikon on the aft deck. It looks like he is going for a low flying aircraft.

I will also be modifying the legs of the bridge crew so they are not posed on straight legs. The poses of the 1/32 scale Lindberg PT-109 crew would have them either falling over or getting sore needs very quickly. At least they are more useful than the ICM US Navy LCM Crew who are wearing really full bell bottom loke trousers.

Cheers from PeterTareBuilder

I believe some of the early crews had the WWI "tin pots" which were standard issue prior to the war.

The early helmet Will is refering to is the doughboy Helmet. I also have one of those in my Exhibit on a maniquinn to show Ron 3. Many of the Ron 3 boys from Bulkeley's Squadron were left to fight with the army on the Philippines. They did in fact wear those type helmets. Thanks Will, I had forgotten about the Ron 3 boys............

When asked, my dad always said the helmets on his boat, PT-342, Ron 24, were green, like the standard Army helmet.
