Next to the rating of CQM (Chief Quartermaster) I find (AA) or (PA). Can anyone tall me what is is?

Also, the same date Robert W. Orrell was promoted to Ensign in RON One, he went on Temporary Duty. Would this be back to Melville for Officers' School or more PT boat training?

Thanks

I have never read a description of temporary duty. The best answer that I can give is an assignment for a limited time period away from permanent assignment.

I don't recall seeing AA and PA.

Those designations are new to me. During WWII many of us had [T] after our rating, meaning temporary. Many of those who stayed in the navy were probably demoted to a lower rate during peacetime when promotion was slower. We were able to move up rapidly during the war.

QM: Look at the doc I posted a couple of days ago. It showed the (PA) on Robert Orrell and two other (AA) designations. Going through the Muster Rolls and Report of Changes, I see quite a few of those designations. I'm always learning!

Thank you for the information. I had never seen the designation "acting appointment" My discharge records have my rate as temporary. I may never have had a permanent rate. Does anyone know the difference between acting and temporary rates? Would being USNR instead of USN make a difference?

Many of you probably know that advancement in the wartime navy could be fairly rapid. I believe that the minimum time at one rate was only three or four months. On a PT we were fortunate that we did not have to wait for someone to leave to make an opening for advancement. Except for the motormacs we usually had only one man in each specialty. If a person performed well he could go from QM 3/c to QM 1/c in six or eight months. The navy would have ended up with for too many Petty Officer 1/c without the temporary designation.

The acting appointments were wartime appontments and when the wrar ended, you would revert to your permanent rank. Worked with both officers and enlisted men.

Of course if you got permanent, you stayed.

At least that is the way I understand it.
