I cast some additional parts needed for the 495. Everything in white is new. The mast and dome i constructed form styrene. The rest is cast resin.
So far this is what I have done:
SO Radar and mast.
Rework 37mm (shorten barrel and make aircraft style mag, still needs grips).
Make cradle, stand and base for 37 and 2 additional 20mm.
Make 2 additional 20mm.
Replace navigation lights with side mounted trpe.
Add grab rails to cabin roof.
Remove molded in raft mount from cabin roof.
Rework roll off rackes to look more like Mk 1.
Move forward torpedo racks forward.
Make additional ready ammo boxes and 20 mm mags (still need some cleanup.)
Move smoke canister to fantail.
I stuck a 1/35 th armor fige in the photo for scale and none of the pices are glued in place yet. Must paint first.
What do you think?

May I ask whhy you decided on the 495? Curious only because my Dad was on that boat and I never hear anyone talk about it.

I never made parts like this before or built a serious ship model. I do mostly WW2 aromor and fighters so I'm learning about PT boats as I go!.

That is awsome. Why did I choose the 495 boat? Well, I wanted to backdate the new 596 kit without doing a lot of rework and scratch building (see how far that got me?) and I wanted a Pacific boat that saw action. In e-mails with Al Ross and Garth Connelly it looked like I was looking for a boat from maybe 372 (RON 27) and up with 488 (RON 33) and up being an even better probability, excluding the Euro boats..
I also found those photos showing the bows of the 490, 491 and 495 boats. These were involved in the Battle of Surigo Strait. There were also photos of boats very close to these in several books and "on-line" so I could try to determine general features for boats just before and after these.
Garth also said he has a source that has talked with Japanese veterns who some feel that 495 MAY have been the boat that actually torpedoed a ship that is credited to some other US ship (Destroyer?) during the battle.
The 495 seems to satisfy my check list and have a little history as well. Also, while there are a couple photos of 495, there are not a lot, at least that I can find, but there are other RON 33 photos so while I can get a general "feel" for how the 495 could have been configured in Oct of '44 there are not many photos that will prove me wrong in case I guess at some feature and the 495 didn't really include it, like did she carry depth charges? I got an e-mail from area51, Gus, who served on the 497 (RON 33) and he thinks the 497 did-behind the stern tubes.
My goal was to build a boat that saw action in the Pacific and the starting point was the 596 so choices were pretty well constrained.
I would love to hear any details or tid-bits you might have. Do you know much about "Gentleman Jim's" (that's what i was told was 495's nickname) configuration or know of a source for more photos or details? Everything I have is either from on-line or prints in books.
When did you father server in RON 33 on 495?

My Dad served on her in 1944. His time ended on 11/19 during a battle with some barges in Ormoc Bay (page 394 in "At Close Quarters" talks about it). There's a lot more to it than that though. The name Gentleman Jim came from one of the 50 cal. gunners who was killed. It was Fury before that as Will said and I have a picture of her with that name attached to the side of the cockpit. The nameplate Gentleman Jim is in the PT museum aboard the USS Massachusetts in Fall River, Mass. It's kind of beat up and it's from that night in Ormoc Bay. If you got questions, let me have them and I'll talk to my Dad. This is great! I didn't think I would ever see a post about my Dad's boat! By the way, the ship Garth was talking about wasn't a destroyer, it was a battleship! I talked to Garth about it and I have the action reports for the night in question. It wasn't the 495 that sunk that ship. They had orders to stay back during that fight. They didn't fire a shot. They came back to base with all ammo unused. I have some pictures of the boat and will send them if you want them.

Thanks Ray. Did you get my e-mails? I attached some photos but I think they are the ones you supplied in the first place. I had several questions for your father in the e-mail too. If you didn't get it, I'll resend w/o the attachments. I sent it to both addresses.I would love to get some photos. I'll e-mail you about the details. I can't believe my good fortune.

I'll send you some pictures from home tonight. My Dad has more but he's in Az. and he'd have to send them to me and then me scan them. I'll see if's he's willing to part with them for a few weeks.
