[StartQuote] Charlie i am not sure if this information is useful to your book project, but here goes. The MTBSTC POOL was dedicated on December 8, 1944 with a spectacular water carnival and swim meet. In attendance that day was Ann Ross, womens National Indoor and Outdoor Diving Champion, Adolf Kiefer, holder of the World Record 200 meter Backstoke since 1935 and Stan Howard former Billy Rose Aquacade Diving sensation. Captain R.V. Miller, Public Works Officer made the official presentation of the Pool and Complex to Comdr. David J. Wash, Commamding Officer of the Training center. The dedication indcluded a colorful Key ceremonny. Many swimming events took place that day, with the final event, the Service Men's Relay Race. The MTB Team consisted of Ens. N.D. Hoyt, Lt.(jg) J.M. Flachman, Ens. G.W. Wilde and MoMM 3/c J.W. Hillis. They clipped the course in a time of 1:56:6. The new pool was a standard 50 meter pool, which is 164 Long by 75 Feet wide. The depth of the pool varied from 4.5 feet deep to 9 feet. The structure housing the pool was 278 feet long by 111 feet wide. A complete state of the art Filtration, recirculation, and sterilization system purified roughly 494,000 gallons of water in an 8 hour period. A large Locker and Shower room completed the facility. Ens. George Belders was the swimming officer in charge of the Pool. He was a swimming instructor with the V-12 unit team at Penn State College, and swam for the University of Colorado doing the Breast Stroke for the Varsity Team. [EndQuote]
