[StartQuote] Michael There are a quite a few references to the bases you mentioned, and a couple of pictures, in the book At Close Quarters, but I'm not sure what your definition of detailed might be. One picture, of a truck trying to make its way through the apparently bottomless mud at Kana Kopa, was particularly illustrative of problems encountered with this base development, and I was amused to read that one truck was actually lost in that mud (please excuse my sense of humor). Now here's one for you, admittedly a long shot: Several years ago, Alyce Guthrie at PT Boats HQ requested my assistance in identifying the significance of or identities of people in a photograph dated Feb 1944 from Elco's files. I was unable to help, and I don't have the photo copy now. It was a seeminly odd photo to be in Elco's file -- my recollection is of a ceremony with half a dozen important-looking men standing around a banquet table, with the guest of honor seated before a very large cake with an equally large number 4 adorning it. It certainly wasn't a birthday cake! I didn't recognize any of the dignitaries, but I vaguely recall the guest of honor was uniformed - but not U.S.! Possibly Australian? (I hope my memory isn't playing tricks on me.) I've always thought this might have something to do with Base 4, although I don't know why Elco would have such a photo. If you think you could possibly help in identifying anything about this photo, please contact Alyce at HQ and offer your assistance - I'm sure she will send you a copy to review. [EndQuote]
