[StartQuote] Hey did anybody notice they are loading a Mark 13 Mod2 torpedo onto a PT Boat? Normally the Mod2 torps were reserved for aircraft drops since they have the circular fin strengthener welded on to prevent fins from being ripped off when dropped from greater height and speed than the old Mod0 and Mod1 torps. I imagine that towards the end of the war 1945 timeframe they had used most all of the older mods and the only thing left were Mod2? Does anybody have any insight on this? On a related note, I spoke to Master Chief Jack Duncan who was PT103s TM and asked about the Mk13 warheads. On the aircraft torpedoes they were filled with "Torpex" which was a highly sensitive mixture of TNT and Powdered Aluminum. However, according to Jack, the PT boat torpedoes were often subjected to shock loads due to the buffeting of waves up against the warheads when in heavy seas, and to reduce the liklihood of the Torpex accidently exploding, So on the PT Boats, they used only warheads that were filled with the less sensitive cast TNT. I had been telling hundreds of tours that they were filed with Torpex all of this time until Jack set me straight! By the way JFKs brother Joe the pilot was killed by Torpex, when they were electrically arming a remote control B17 laden with explosives meant to be rammed into the submarine pens. As soon as they threw the arming switch supposedly a stray current touched off the Torpex. The idea was to take off` place it in autopilot- remote control using High Frequency Radio, arm the explosives, then bail out over England while the chase plane remotely flew the plane to the target., Jerry Gilmartin PT658 Crewman Portland OR[EndQuote]
