They were both considered obsolete before the invasion of the Phillipines, so I believe the Japanese Naval Command considered them to be expendable. As it turned out, both ships were sunk at Surigao Straights with Yamshiro breaking into 2 pieces both of which stayed afloat for hours until issued the "coup de gras" from nearby PT boats during the following morning.
