[StartQuote] hi will when iwas on treasury i had to stand base watches. i was armed with a machine gun.no one was allowed,after dark, to go from base area down to the boat area.uif for some reason you had to go down to the boat area you had better know the password for the night or you would be shot on th e spot. no other questions asked as you coukd not take a chance it wAS A JAPANESE SOLDIER.WE DID HAVE SOMEONE RAID THE base gaslley area one night.he did not answer the command.i was on duty.i gopt no answer so i shot into the astorage area where i heard the nopise.i heard a yell but did not fing anyone. we searched the area to no avail.did not see any blood on the ground.we ch exckked the dispensary next am to se if anyone showd up with a would.no one did.we assumed it was a wandering japanese and he just disapeared back into tgjh e jungle.we had an officer of the day OD wwho was responsible ofr the guard watches.he was usually a lt JG.we hAd no shore patrol as such.i thing then same thing was done on rendova.in the phillipines we also stood watches and there was ab officer,who rode aroung in a jeep that checked the different watch stations.we called him captain midnight.that was at ormoc "base 17".the security was a lot tighter at ormoc as tjhere was also a lot of "brass" there and we and the so called phillipine guerillas did not get along very well. earl richmond[EndQuote]
