[StartQuote] Happy Thanksgiving to all: Frank, Thanksgiving 1943 we spent at Lambu Lambu Cove, Vella La Vella We had been on patrol the night before. The cooks prepared a great dinner for the Squadron. We ate outside at tables set up under the coconut trees. Food at Vella La Vella was really lousy but a couple of days before Thanksgiving a small APC brought in turkeys, cranberries and fresh potatoes. Best meal we had had since we had been there. The medical officer brought out gallons of Grade A alcohol and poured into a big pot with grapefruit juice. We filled our metal canteen cups and had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Captain Smith called off all patrols for Thanksgiving night. A sad note: I was calling all my PT 242 crew buddies to wish them Happy Thanksgiving. Robert C.(Bob) Pratt QM/1c at Westbrook, ME made his last patrol in October. Bob and I hitchhiked from the Solomons back to the U.S.togerther when we were relieved of duty from the boat. We also were together in Boston with our wives for two months before we went back to the Philippines. Great friend and crewman. That leaves four of my crew left out of 15. C. J. Willis[EndQuote]
