[StartQuote] Hi Randy and Frank, We had Liz Ware come visit us from Chicago last September. She brought several Packard books with her for me to scan. (Her dad was Chief Engineer for Marine Engines at Packard) She had this book called "Packards on the water" and this photo was at the back of the book. The gear is labeled as "Packard Bevel Pinion Reduction Gear" that reduces propeller speed 2 to 1 and was designed specifically for USAF Crash Rescue Boats. It "has other outstanding features such as built in thrust bearings and reversing oil pump" per the caption. Here is the photo.
