[StartQuote] I HAVE TO AGREE WITH VICTOR CHUN, WRITING A BOOK IS THE FUN PART, FINDING A PUBLISHER ISN'T. IN 1999 I WROTE A NOVEL ABOUT YOUNG AMERICANS FLYING FOR THE RAF IN WWII. AFTER SPENDING TWO YEARS LOOKING FOR A PUBLISHER, I SELF-PUBLISHED IT WHILE SOME OF MY TARGEY AUDIENCE WAS STILL AROUND TO READ IT. THEN I WROTE THE SEQUEL FOLLOWING THE MAIN CHARACTERS TO KOREA IN 1952, SELF- PUBLISHED THAT AS WELL. BOTH BOOKS WERE PRCIED TO SELL AT $8 AND BOTH BOOKS GOT GREAT REVIEWS FROM THE MEN WHO ACTUALLY FLEW THESE MISSIONS. THE BEST PART OF THE WHOLE PROCESS WAS MEETING AND CORRESPONDING WITH MEN LIKE GEN.ROBIN OLDS, COL DON LOPEZ AND CMDR GUY BORDELON. SADLY, ALL THREE OF THESE FIGHTER ACES HAVE PASSED AWAY IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, AS HAVE SO MANY WWII VETS. I'VE ACTUALLY OUTLINED AND RESEARCHED A WWII PT BOAT STORY , BUT I'M AFRAID WE'RE FAST LOSING OUR AUDIENCE. HARDLY A WEEK GOES BY WITHOUT A POSTING ABOUT ANOTHER PT VET HEADING OUT ON THEIR LAST PATROL. AND TED WALTHER IS RIGHT, IN THE END, IT'S NOT ABOUT THE BASES OR THE BOATS. WE PRESERVE THE BOATS BECAUSE WE CAN'T PRESERVE THE MEN. ROSS FISHER ross@dupagels.lib.il.us[EndQuote]
