[StartQuote] I never went to Australia for R&R, but I was in Australia for a week or two in December of 1943. Several of us were awaiting transportation to New Guinea. Our transportation proved to be a slow LST. While in Brisbane we stayed in a tent city base downstream from Brisbane on the Brisbane river. The mosquitos were almost unbearable--much worse than I saw later in New Guinea. What I want to relate is Christmas, 1943, at the beach. A group of us took a train south to the Gold Coast area. It is a beautiful area with almost endless beaches. The waves could roll in undisturbed all the way from South America. We had an enjoyable day just playing around in the sand and in the water. I do not remember the menu for that day, but I am sure that it was not turkey. Later that day we returned to the base, and in a few days we were on the LST bound for New Guinea.[EndQuote]
