[StartQuote] I spent very little time on a base but one incident stands out. When I arrived in the Solomons our first stop was Guadalcanal, late at night, and of course during a rainstorm. Mud was thick and everywhere. Our "new boots" were mud to the knees. Tha dockmaster was not expecting us but said we could sleep in the church. We were pleased to see a church building in the rain and headed for it, only to find it was only the front facade, rubble for a floor, no roof or walls. We found the friendliest rubble pile and tried to minimize the blowing rain. It finally passed and about the time we got to sleep there was an air raid. From there things went downhill. After that I always appreciated being on a boat and not a base. [EndQuote]
